One thing that has surprised me as I’ve immersed myself in the author world is the number of fiction genres there are, and the variety of sub-genres within them.
There are the obvious ones, like thrillers, romance, sci-fi etc., but others like post-apocalyptic (zombies), cozy mystery (Agatha Christie), and Fantasy (Harry Potter) are incredibly popular too.
Next time you’re browsing for books on Amazon (other retailers are available), have a look down the listing at the categories a book is listed under (these are not necessarily chosen by the author) to see how specific the sub-genres can be. And it seems readers cannot get enough of certain niches, so it’s up to us authors to help them find them. Supply and demand.
Oh, and by the way, Amazon knows which part of the listings their customers look at the most. Read that again. How could they know that?
